MOUNT BALDY'S REAL NAME IS MOUNT SAN ANTONIO

CHERISHING OUR VALLEY                2013

One of the most important saints in the Roman Catholic Church is Anthony of Padua. Almost every Catholic church in the San Fernando Valley has some sort of recognition of this beloved monk. Since this Italian is the patron saint of the recovery of lost objects, he is important where car keys and eye glasses are concerned.
Because Saint Anthony was a Franciscan monk, as were the founders of the California missions.  there is a mission, lots of parish churches and parochial schools, rivers, streams and village roads named for him.
Mount San Antonio, commonly called Mount Baldy by the less than reverend, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains. At 10,068 feet, it is most often identified during the winter months from the eastern communities of the San Fernando Valley.  Many a Valley high school or college student has been persuaded (for the sake of science) to skip classes to hike or ski Mount Baldy .
